I thought I had heard that stouts were in vogue. I thought I had heard that people were seeking out the darkness. I thought I had heard that there was finally a little balance on the beer shelf. O foolish drinker, paying mind to what you hear! I hadn’t been to Hidden Beers for a while, holidays you know, so I went on down expecting to find something special. I did, but…there wasn’t much else to go with it. Must I settle for IPAs and sours? I have to admit they can also be surprising and well worth your time. But I can pick out something a little special from that group too; a TDH NEIPA? That’s a new one! It’s from solid providers Prizm and Verdant, who have made some tasty collaborations in the past. Let’s see if Jus D’Orange continues the trend.

Opaque and juicy looking, sort of a natural orange juice appearance. It’s bubbly at first, but the head starts thin and vanishes in no time. Not a strong aroma, just whispers of caraway and sesame. The flavor is also sedate, but with a depth to it. It tastes very planty, unsweetened and undrowned in extras. I feel like the Mosaic was scantly used in comparison to the other two hops, at least from what I remember of Founders (?) Mosaic IPA at Roll. That was years ago, of course, and memory can be a treacherous thing. The taste is refreshing and summery, a bright spot for a dark weekend, but there is also some heaviness to the beer itself. It isn’t aggressive, but it sits with confidence and gives the impression that it won’t be pushed around. It’s able to present itself as an all-year possibility, a font of freshness in warm weather, a warm blanket in the cold and damp. It wakes up a little after warming up, but it’s still pretty much a softy. I was told to expect a “bomb” of a beer (in a positive sense), but I don’t think it’s that explosive. Really, it’s probably a more broadly appealing beer because of it.

On the seventh day of Beermas I went and got for me
Seven boney swimmers
Six geese post-laying
Five gold nuts
Four obvious non-kiwis
A three-time remade masterpiece
Two guarding lions
And a crow glaring silently

It’s not swans, but it’s definitely swimming. Or at least it’s something that used to swim, until being snatched up by undead hands. Somehow I think O Fortuna has several levels hiding in its name. It’s a complicated beer, DDH West Coast IPA, and to go with that it’s a collaboration between three, count ’em three, breweries. The magic of working together on a concoction has a fairy tale ring to it, three witches brewing up a potion that can only be counteracted by seven feathers of seven swans from seven seas, or some mystical folk numerology like that.

We’re back to clear, golden, blinding white headed brew, with a heavy and spicy aroma fitting of West Coast IPAs. There’s a mix of snappy hops and pine, and a sort of hot marmalade. The blend of perfume is reflected in the taste, although there’s more sourness and grain on the tongue. It dances and sparkles on the tongue, like fingerbones tapping. There’s a sweet center hiding in a ball of roughage and savory herbs, hard to identify exactly, but always peeking out. It’s like the setting sun in a mostly cloudy sky.

Is this the first Saturday of a series of terror? Will darkness descend and drive us into madness? Probably, but it’s not so dark today! After my taste sensation last week, I have something that’s almost more of a palate cleanser, although only for hobby drinkers like myself. It’s an Oso-Prizm collab, and I have had some mindblowing Prizms recently, at a respectable 8.5%. It promises a basket of fruit, although more in taste references than in actual fruit puree as an additive, and I notice with interest that there are three, count ’em three, grains in the ingredients list: purity-compliant barley; exception-demanding wheat; because-they’re-there oats. With all the curiosities, the name makes a lot of sense. Let’s indulge in some Clickbait DIPA.

It’s cloudy and lemony colored, pillowy headed and lightly spiced. Very lightly in fact, there’s hardly any aroma at all. I suppose there’s a hint of fruit in there, just an echo of a can of mandarins or pineapple opened hours ago. I am once again surprised by the explosion of flavor that comes with the first sip. It’s a tangle of tropical tastes, I can’t really pull them apart at first. I also feel a real weight to the beer, maybe from the triplet grain content. It’s one of the less citrusy IPAs, with more of a peach and mango character, and that squeeze of pineapple on top. It’s like the last echo of summer vacation, with a yellow-y orange sunset belying the coming dark evenings. It’s a candle in a pumpkin, sending out just a few rays of light from squirrel chewed holes (that was a crazy photo to come across). It’s a torch leading the way…down what road, we can only wait and see.

There was one more choice from La Buena Cerveza that was right in line with my tastes, even with a little extra coconut. Scanning the shelves for those stouts I found Prizm’s Strange Casualties, a coconut imperial stout which almost sounds mundane at this point. Weirdly, temperatures have gone down after a big freaking fire some few kilometers away from me, but it is still hotter than I am especially happy with. Winter will be here in no time, and I’m sure I’ll have complaints about that, and probably there won’t be enough dark beers to keep me happy. Or maybe there will, since the few beer stores that remain will all be open again after August. Keep hopes high? Gotta stay optimistic.

It pours nicely, but there is an immediate headpocalypse. Maybe I didn’t get all that sour out of there? There is a strong coconut aroma, a little bit of sunscreen too. And lurking in the background something cakey. It has an interesting blend of heavy stout bitter and coconut flavored sweet, kind of like some kind of filled pastry. Digging into it, there’s a little soapy taste, which might also indicate less than optimal rinsing. It leaves an odd energy behind after you swallow, like something electric. It doesn’t have any disagreeable aftertaste or stickiness, just a weird kind of buzz. It’s a perfectly fine imperial stout, with its coconut addition, although not quite as crazy as some other recent things I’ve dumped into my glass.
